Universal Flash Storage (UFS) was presented by JEDEC as the solution to the all too broad assortment of flash storage solutions we have today. The number of different flash memories are quite confusing for the common man, and the manufacturers are no fans of the big mix we have today. Seven of the largest memory chip manufacturers, and utilizers of them, have announced their support for the UFS specification. Micron Technology, Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Spansion, STMicroelectronics, and Texas Instruments have all decided to back the standard developed by JEDEC.

This move will hopefully lead to only one kind of memory card, and perhaps extinguish the need for 50-in-1 memory card readers. Unfortunately the mother company of Sony Ericsson, Sony isn’t one them, but since it is known for its proprietary standards, we can’t say that we’re surprised, but if Sony Ericsson starts using UFS instead of MemoryStick maybe the rest of the company will follow. One can always hope.
