Netgear and D-Link are the two of the first manufacturers to launch products based on the coming wireless standard 802.11n. This protocol isn’t finished yet, which actually makes it possible that these products will not be compatible with future producs. But we pressume that both Netgear and D-Link have a pretty good grasp on the situation. Anywho, the new 802.11n standard will be a huge step forward compared to 802.11g, which is the fastest standard of today. 802.11g has a maximal transfer rate at 54Mbps but can be increased to 108Mbps with dual channels. The 802.11n kit that Netgear has launched will allow transfer rates up to 300Mbps, I.e. three times as fast as today’s technology.
The 802.11n standard sports up to 600Mbps, but then we’re talking theoretical speeds at perfect conditions. D-Link hasn’t launched any 802.11n products so far, but has said they will come before the end of the month. Netgear’s RangeMax kit seems to be quite hard to find and we are pretty convinced that you have to live in some of the bigger countries to be able to find it. The kit is listed at $349 and contains a 802.11n capable router and a notebook network card.
We are looking forward to more 802.11n based products as it is not always that the 802.11g standard is enough.
