Intel is expected to launch the new processor architecture Sandy Bridge at CES 2011 starting January. Focus is primarily on stationary systems in the mid-range segment, but also the mobile market. A roadmap showing 20 or so models have now leaked.

Sandy Bridge will be made with 32 nanometer technology and become Intel’s first processor architecture where CPU and GPU have been put on the same silicon. Previous processors with integrated graphics circuits have been built from separate circuits but with Sandy Bridge they unite the two components on the transistor level.

According to German site ComputerBase.de Intel will launch 13 desktop processors and 6 mobile processors.

Sandy Bridge will be launched part of the current Core i3, i5 and i7 families, but with a product name that ends in a four number code, 2xxx. Some models have an additional suffix for separating unlocked and energy efficient models.

The new Sandy Bridge processors have a power consumption from 35W to 95W, and operate at frequencies between 2.5 GHz and 3.4 GHz. Like current Intel processors most models sport Turbo technology (even for GPU) and HyperThreading with half of the processors. Intel’s new desktop processors will launch together with the LGA 1155 platform (Cougar Point) and Intel’s 6 series of chipsets (Intel B65, Q67, P67), which means you are once again forced to update both motherboard and CPU.

Intel’s mobile Sandy Bridge processors gets similar product names to the desktops. The powerful circuits will get relatively high power consumption and paired with chipsets from the Huron River platform (Mobile Intel QM67, QS67, HM67).

1 1

During the first weeks of next year we will get all the information we need on Sandy Bridge and its performance, but there is no doubt Intel is putting everything on having a big selection from day one.
