USB 3.0 has a theoretic transfer speed of 5 Gbps. A substantial part of this disappears into thin air when controller circuits and protocols are done with their inefficient operations. Renesas Electronics has tackled this with two new USB 3.0 controller for up to 40% higher write performance.

Renesas Electronics has named the new more efficient SuperSpeed USB 3.0 controllers µPD720201 and µPD720202. Renesas’ third generation USB 3.0 controllers also has a new data processing circuit that increase the effective write speed with more than 40%, while they are also smaller and more energy efficient than competing solutions.

Renesas controller circuits measure 7×7 mm and 8x8mm respectively and consumes only 4.5 milliwatt when idle, a decrease of 90% from previous Renesas solutions. This will lower power conusmption and increase battery time with mobile devices in idle.

The new USB 3.0 controllers will support updates of its own firmware through or other interfaces on the system it is integrated into. Renesas’ new circuits will support two or four USB 3.0 ports and is expected to find its way into products in Q4 after mass production starts in September.
