New screen technologies and higher pixel densities are popping up now and then, even more so now that smartphones and tablets are becoming all the more popular. Samsung says it has a new 10.1″ LCD panel with 2560 x 1600 pixel resolution that will be shown soon, but also commercially available this year.
SID Display Week 2011 International Symposium will be held next week and will be the most interseting for consumers in a long time. Samsung’s new 10.1″ screen is based on PenTile technology, developed by Samsung, and is a direct competitor to In-Plane Switching (IPS) that was developed by LG.
Besides measuring only 10.1″ and sport 2560 x 1600 pixels, the monitor will consume 40% less power according to Samsung. The new display will be commercially available this year and most likely be found in tablets.
It’s a bit tragic that displays for smartphones and tablets are improving so fast, while the desktop monitor market has been standing still for some time now, and instead move toward lower densities as 1920 x 1200 was replaced by 1920 x 1080 as the standard resolution. There are a couple of displays at 2560 x 1600 pixels, but they are slowly, very slowly, being replaced by 2560 x 1440, which are still very expensive at 700€ and up.
