OCZ announces affordable “Solid 2” Solid State Drives

OCZ has launched a new set of Solid State Drives, and they’re for the budget enthusiasts. It’s all relative of course and in terms of SSDs, the OCZ Solid 2 series is said to be very affordable, in spite of the new memory controller from Indilinx. OCZ Solid 2, like most retail SSDs, use the 2.5″ format and the Indilinx controller aside, the drive sports MLC NAND flash memory chips for storage.

With SATA II and 64MB cache the Solid 2 series offers sequential read and write speeds up to 125MB/s and 100MB/s respectively. Something that may not scare off the competition, but if OCZ comes through on the price it may still go a long way.

OCZ has announced two models, one at 60GB and one at 120GB, and so far there are relatively few stores that have listed the new drives. You can find the 60GB model for around 200€ in Northern Europe, while the 120GB cost nearly twice as much 380€. These prices will hopefully drop as more stores starts listing the drives.
