Solid State Drives have surpassed the traditional mechanical harddrive on almost every level. Performance, power consumption and durability are the trumps of the SSD technology, while mechanical drives still rely on much better pricing. Alas, SSDs are often 25-30 times more expensive per Gigabyte. According to OCZ, being one of the most prominent actors on the SSD market this will change within two years.
Company VP Ryan Petersen has said that the Solid State technology will offer better performance, higher storage capacity but also competitive prices in 2012 “already”.
The great turning point will be near the end of 2011. Then we will see MLC flash memory with 3 to 4 bit data, compared to 2 bit used today. This will in theory double the storage capacity with the same manufacturing process.
Despite all of that it still feels like an optimistic time plan since it doesn’t really consider the development of the HDD technology, which is moving forward day by day with a knife to the throat in one last attempt to not become extinct within the coming decade or so.
