Memory maker OCZ Technology will move over to the storage sector since it has officially announced that it will retract from the memory market on February 28th 2011. OCZ will then close down all DRAM product lines and instead be completely focused on its SSD technology, which already makes up 78% of the company revenue.
OCZ Technology has been one of the leading actors among SSD makers for retail, and during the years that have passed the company have been transitioning into making more SSDs and less DRAM. The reason is simply the much better margins and profit sustained from SSDs.
The tough climate among DRAM makers is only getting tougher and OCZ has seen its share shrunk and it has been rough to stand out, not the least as a relatively small company as OCZ.
We reported about how OCZ was going to make more SSDs and less DRAM back in the Fall of 2010, the quarterly sales of SSDs had increased with fantastic 265% and the latest fiscal quarter revealed that 78% of the total revenue came from SSD sales. The SSD revenue alone was bigger the entire revenue during the preceeding quarter, another proof of which market is the most interesting.
“We believe the market opportunity for SSDs is significant, and to that end, we will continue to invest in research and development to extend our leadership position. We also plan to increase our sales and marketing efforts in order to facilitate continued revenue growth and increased market share as SSDs gain adoption in all segments.”
OCZ isn’t just about retail, but also makes business products with its SSD technology. Its latest fiscal quarter report showed a revenue 53.2 million dollar where 41.5 million dollar comes from SSD sales. How much the memory sales contributed wasn’t really told, but evidentally not enough to be part of the conmpany’s future.
