OCZ has expanded the Vertex SSD series  and this time it has decided not to work with controller maker SandForce. Under the hood we namely find OCZ’s own Indilinx Everest 2 controller that is capable of speeds up to 90,000 IOPS and 550 MB/s.

OCZ showed an early version of Vertex 4 at CES already, but when we asked them about the drive it had no name. OCZ has now decided to expand the Vertex series with its in-house made controller Everest 2 that it claims is better suited for regular user scenarios than SandForce controllers that struggle with compressed files.

OCZ Vertex 4 is specified to sequential read speeds up to 550 MB/s and write speeds up to 500 MB/s. The IOPS performance is where it really beats the drum and this unit will be capable of 90,000 IOPS in retail suit. The live demonstration that were done at CeBIT puts performance somewhat lower, but then in the very intense benchmark AS SSD benchmark.

OCZ Vertex 4 also supports SATA 6.0 Gbps and TRIM, but also big storage capacities. Up to 2TB can be addressed by the Everest 2 controller and even if it will take some time before we see units in these sizes the first Vertex 4 units will be in stores sometime in Q2.
