We recently reported about how AMD had been overclocking its coming Phenom II processor, also known as Deneb, to heights never imagined at a recent media event in Austin, Texas. The unofficial number is 6.3GHz, but AMD wanted to keep expectations down and asked sites to change the number to “more than 5GHz”. However I think everyone who has the skills of running a processor at these speeds with such extreme cooling is also aware that every processor behaves differently.
Independent overclockers have now posted results that more than confirms that Phenom II is indeed capable of going to frequencies at least near 6GHz. After some work they were able to find a stable frequency of 5920MHz. The system specifications are unknown, but we can only presume that the cooling in question must have been liquid nitrogen. They’ve used ASUS M3A79-T Deluxe and 2x2GB CSX 1066MHz in previous runs, but we can’t be certain this was used this time.
