Quad FX is AMD’s new enthusiast platform, according to AMD at least. We on the other hand have had tendencies of calling it a workstation platform as the enthusiast angle is a bit far-fetched, or remote at best, while it is also a bit hard to handle. But if we are to classify it as an enthusiast platform we should also treat it like one, which brings us to overclocking. There is hardly anyone calling himself an enthusiast that runs his components at default frequencies when there is so much free performance to collect. Legit Reviews therefore decided to overclock Quad FX…
“I wish I had some screen shots or killer performance numbers for you, but none are to be had. Even though the CPU temperatures outside are night and day better it didn’t help out overclocking one bit. We tried getting the system to post at anything higher than 215MHz and it couldn’t do it with stability. It looks like 3.2GHz is the most we are going to get out of this system!”
.. and the result is a real catastrophe if we are to call this an enthusiast platform. Sure, we could blame this on a premature platform, BIOS, drivers or such, but let’s just face it and realize the bitter truth that this is not something that will be able to compete with Intel Core 2 Extreme in any way among gamers or overclockers.
