Yesterday NGOHQ.com released an SLI Patch that was suppose to make all motherboards with two x16 PCI Express slots NVIDIA SLI capable. No matter what chipset or manufacturer it was suppose to work. The patch comes from ULi’s official patch that unlocked the SLI support for its own chipsets, a patch NGOHQ managed to modify to work with other chipsets as well. The news spread quickly last night, but we chose not to report about the patch as our own tests were far from successful. We’ve tested the new SLI patch on two different Intel chipsets, Intel 955X and 975X that both is suppose to work according to NGOHQ, without any success. We are far from the only ones who have had problems with the patch and instead it seems very few actually get it to work.
Any reports about SLI on Crossfire boards haven’t appeared though, but it sure tickles the mind. So far there seems to be big limitations with the patch. A nice development of course and if they can tune and tweak it while NVIDIA doesn’t try to choke it this could be a very convenient way to build an SLI system in the future.
“We’ve managed to rip the installer and to create a modified version of the SLI patch that allows you to use it with EVERY motherboard. We couldn’t do in-depth testing on other chipsets, but if the rumors are true then it should definitely work. Feel free to use it at your own risk, and please post the results in our forums. Remember, this is a modified version and is not supported by Asrock, ULi or Nvidia.”
