Yesterday we reported on the first previews of Intel’s dual-core processor Pentium D and something many neglect to mention was the power consumption. At Anandtech they’ve published part 2 of their coverage of the Pentium D and a series of new tests among others multitasking with games they’ve also published figures on the power consumption. “The Pentium 4 vs. Pentium D comparison is also interesting, as the 2nd core doesn’t add all that much to overall system power consumption. In this case, we’re looking at an increase in overall system power consumption by less than 15%. Intel still doesn’t win in the power consumption department though; if you want something cool and quiet, AMD is still the way to go.” We also get to see some interesting figures of NCQ, the renowned harddrive technology, something that really finds the spot when multitasking. Those of you who are using many applications at the same time it seems “dualcore” and NCQ is the way to go. Read on at Anandtech.
The sheer thought of two extremely hungry Prescott-cores right next to eachother was something many had a hard time to grasp when Intel announced the Pentium D.
The results aren’t as frightening as one might’ve imagined.
