AMD’s Phenom II family was quite recently expanded to include the new flagship Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition. The processor operates at 3.2GHz, which was 200MHz higher than the previous top model, Phenom II X4 945 for the Socket AM2+ platform. X4 945 had been pushed to more than 6600MHz under extreme cold and even if X4 955 has 200MHz more to boot, we had some great expectations since it was made using AMD’s latest and refined 45nm process.

Last week we reported on how several overclockers were pushing the all new processor to new heights, including a new record for AMD processors when Phenom II X4 955 was pushed to close to 6.7GHz by a Chinese team. Back then we predicted that it wouldn’t take long before we would see 7GHz, which has now been surpassed with a big margin.

Together with overclockers qooitry and Ultra40m Sigh has improved the result several times over. The latest and best result was uploaded to the Overclocking World Record Database and is 7127MHz, which was achieved using liquid nitrogen and a voltage of 1.95V.

This was quickly trumped by overclocker OCER_Michael who published a result at 7200MHz, but with an impossible multiplier it doesn’t look very authentic. Until we receive further information on this result, we consider the Chinese LimitTeam the record holders.

AMD’s Phenom II processors are truly something for the extreme overclockers and we will be taking a closer look at Phenom II X4 955 processor from an overclockers point of view soon.
