Philips increases the storage capacity of DVD-Media

On a trade fair in Japan, CEATEC JAPAN 2003, that will kick-off on the 7th of October, Philips will together with MKM (Mitsubishi Kagaku Media) demonstrate a new double-layer technology for DVD writing.
Printed DVD media has since the introduction been using a dual-layer” technology, which explains why a DVD movie disc can store up to 9 GBs of information instead of only 4.7 GBs as is available on today’s writable media.
Philips has now succeeded in transferring the double-layer technology to writable DVD media, which makes it possible to store up to 8.5 GBs of information on each disc; almost double the current capacity.
A nice feat about the new technology is that the discs will be fully backwards compatible with today’s DVD players, which was Philips second goal.
DVD writers for both PCs and regular players with support for the new DVD+R standard are expected to arrive in 2004.
We hope to see them as quickly as possible as this is a very useful technology that hopefully won’t get much more expensive than the current DVD standards.
