PlayStation 3 has been the trailing console of the three most recently launched video game consoles. Wii literally exploded out of the box and took the market by storm when it launched, and has been outselling both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 with big margins, and still is. PlayStation 3 on the other hand, has been, just like it’s predecessor PlayStation 2 was, a slow starter. Xbox 360 has been around for a year longer than the others, but the sales have remained steady for long. It was also ahead of PlayStation 3 up until January of this year.
Somewhere around the beginning of the new years, PlayStation 3 sales surpassed Xbox 360 console sales (data courtesy of VGChartz). And since then PlayStation 3 has been the more popular of the two. It’s still far behind Wii, and with the summer coming up we don’t expect any major changes anytime soon. Nintendo recently launched a couple of big titles, and Sony has several titles of its own that should boost sales even further, but overall positions are not expected to change.
The Microsoft camp has been said to be calm though, it is confident that the established user base is solid and that sales will remain strong. Rumor has it that a new version of Xbox 360 is on the way. A cooler and optimized version that should be even cheaper to manufacture.
