Playstation 3 officially presented

Playstation 3 has finally been officially presented according to plans at E3 in Los Angeles, USA. We have for a few days been drooling over Xbox 360 and you might wonder how Sony is suppose to compete with Microsoft and its big launch campaign. Sony has been totally quiet and bet all cards on E3, and it seems it has gathered quite some aces as it now presents Playstation 3. The rumours have said that Playstation 3 would be a more powerful console than Xbox 360 when it comes to raw performance and if we are to believe Sonys this is correct.

 

Playstation 3 uses as you might know a processor called Cell, a processor which isn’t constructed quite different from the regular processors we find in e.g. a PC. We have earlier seen a few previews and the speculations on what Cell can do and Sony continued to show some impressive demos of the console during E3. Among others they showed how Playstation 3 encoded 12 HD signals at full speed. A mighty impressive task, especially since PS3 only uses 7 out of 8 available SPE units in the Cell-processor.

We will in the next report take a closer look at the hardware specifications and some more information regarding the Cell-processor and the graphic circuit from nVidia. nVidia RSX Reality Synthesizer will acccording to rumours be much more powerful than two 6800 Ultra in SLI, a system that will cost you over $800 only in graphic cards. This enormous power is behind PS3’s standard resolution of 1080p (!), 1920×1080 pixlar. And with two video outputs you can run two HDTV monitors at 1080p resolution. Either as an 32×9 ultrawidescreen or with different information on each screen.

Other interesting information is that PS3 supports up to 7 wireless controllers via Bluetooth 2.0. There are also two integrated Gigabit Ethernet portar (router function) and wireless networking in the form of WiFi 802.11b/g. PS3 will just as Xbox 360 rely a lot on the internet and according to Sony be online all the time. At the same time you will be abe to connect your PSP to your PS3 via the wireless network, aither to transfer files or perhaps as an extra controller for the PS3.
