PlayStation 3 hasn’t been selling as well as Sony had estimated and instead it’s the cheaper console from Nintendo, Wii that has been luring buyers worldwide, while Xbox 360 has managed to gain a big portion of the market through its early launch. Rumors of a PS3 price cut are becoming more and more frequent. The very latest says that we can expect a price cut of 100 USD in a month or two. A pretty significant price cut, but according to analysts this is possibly too little, too late to make any real difference in the sales.
“Savner noted that Sony made a number of mistakes. Consumers are far more price sensitive than they anticipated; consumers are wary/indifferent to Blu-ray (a main driver of the PS3 cost); and Sony didn’t have enough compelling exclusives at launch. To make up more ground, he thinks Sony would actually need a $200 price cut, but doesn’t see that happening.”
Sony has headwind from here on and the question is what it will do about it. The alternatives are to cut prices even further or convincing the consumers that PlayStation 3 is really worth all those dollars.
