PlayStation 3 may not have sold as well as Xbox 360 or Nintendo Wii when counting total amounts, for various reasons, but it has trumped its predecessor, PlayStation 2, when comparing first year sales. At least when you look in the UK, where Sony has now sold 1 million PlayStation 3 consoles since the launch March 23 of last year. PlayStation 2 needed 50 weeks to reach 1 million consoles. Figures are also showing that PlayStation 3 is selling better than Xbox 360 in the UK.
It would be nice to see some similar figures for other countries, and it’s going to be an interesting year for PlayStation 3. Who knows, maybe Electronics Arts was right to claim that PS3 would outsell Xbox 360 in 2008.
Nintendo Wii reached 1 million units in just 38 weeks, while it took Microsoft 60 weeks to reach the same amount with Xbox 360.
