Sony has a lot on stake with the upcoming launch of its video game console PlayStation 3 and its not just its position on the video game console market that will be affected by PS3’s success. Even its venture with the optical format Blu-ray is highly dependent on PlayStation 3. The console’s support for Blu-ray is one of the big attractions so both products are highly dependent on each other. Blu-ray may be the perhaps most important part of PlayStation 3, but it is also the component which has caused the most trouble. It has made a press release where it says that the supply of PlayStation 3’s could be even worse than expected during 2006. The reason is simply that there is a shortage of one of the components … the Blu-ray unit.
“Sony Corp., which slashed its profit forecast yesterday, said it may not reach this year’s shipment target for the PlayStation 3 game console because of a parts shortage in the Blu-ray high-definition disc drive.”
What kind of effect this will have on Sony’s predicted supply of PlayStation 3 remains to be seen. We know that the supply will be poor though, the delayed launch in Europe is one reason.
