As if it wasn’t hard enough to get a hold of Atom-based computers, motherboard manufacturer Portwell has launched a new product that relies on Intel’s power efficient microprocessor. Portwell says its Nano-8044 is the first Atom-based nano-ITX motherboard on the market, and to those of you who are not used to dealing with the different formfactors, nano-ITX is really small, 12x12cm (4.7″ x 4.7″).

The netbook market has become immensely popular thanks to the neat sizes and low prices, but they are still huge in comparison to Nano-8044. Even though the whole motherboard is no bigger than a CD, Portwell has still managed to fit it with quite a lot of features as you can see from the specifications listed below.

It uses the power efficient Poulsbo chipset and the motherboard comes with an integrated Atom processor at 1.6GHz or 1.1GHz. It has integrated GbE and graphics, one PCIe x1 slot and a whole set of in and outputs, and there is little missing despite the mere size of the board.

Ironically it seems Portwell is the first to launch an Atom-based nano-ITX motherboard, but Axiomtek has already announced the world’s smallest Atom-based motherboard; namely a pico-ITX motherboard measuring only 10×7.2cm.
