Intel has now, about two weeks after the launch of its quad-core desktop processor Kentsfield, also launched its server model based on the same core. Clovertown is the code-name of the processor while it will be known as Xeon 5300 in stores. In ours and others reviews of Kentsfield it’s pretty clear that this quad-core processor has an enormous performance potential, but that there are few applications which can really utilize the parallel performance offered. On the server market things are a lot different, here practically all applications have a thorough multithreading support and therefore Clovertown should have a lot easier to be accepted.

At TechReport they’ve published a short preview of Clovertown where they discuss the various processor models which is being launched, what chipsets will be used and other interesting information. Nice reading while waiting for the more extensive reviews of Clovertown, which most likely will appear soon.
