High resolution displays is in demand more than ever and pairing this with the up-and-coming OLED technology we have a very interesting combination. Sharp has now presented a new 13.5″ OLED panel with a resolution of 3840×2160 pixels.
Sharp and Semiconductor Energy Laboratory has together developed the new panel prototype, whose exciting specifications spawns from the new IGZO technology. The new screen technology “indium gallium zinc oxide” (IGZO) uses a new generation of oxide semiconductors (indium (In), gallium (Ga) and zinc (Zn)) unlike current amorph semiconductors. Besides really high resolutions the IGZO technology will enable screens with lower energy consumption and thinner bezels. Sharp also showed a flexible 3.4″ display that was made with the new technoogy. Sharp has been experimenting with IZGO in the past and shown a 6.1″ LCD with 2560 x 1600 pixels resolution.
The new OLED prototype measures 13.5″ diagonally and with QFHD resolution at 3840×2160 pixels offers a pixel density at 326 ppi, the same level as Apple’s Retina screen in iPhone 4S. The actual panel builds on white OLEDs with a RGB color filter and offers four times as many pixels as current Full-HD panels at 1920×1080 pixels.
As usual when it comes to product prototypes and future technology Sharp is quiet on when we will see these high resolution OLED panels on the market, but the company aims to upgrade its fabs during the current fiscal year, ending March 31st, 2013.
