Qimonda is currently developing a new hardware platform together with Advantest for testing the next generation graphics card memory GDDR5. The new memory technology is expected to become the next big standard after the GDDR3 technology, which means that GDDR4 is more or less just a short pit stop. Qimonda claims that GDDR5 will be perfect for both high-end cards, video game consoles and other devices requiring a high memory bandwidth. To ensure that the GDDR5 technology is mature enough to be launched it has to go through extensive testing and development, which is something Qimonda and Advantest have started doing now. It’s uncertain when we will see the first GDDR5 circuits being used by actual graphics cards, but it’s pretty obvious the memory manufacturers want’s to roll out the new technology as soon as possible. Qimonda is looking to become one of the most powerful companies behind the new memory technology.
