Quake 4 performance with ATi’s OpenGl fix

Small preview imageWe earlier reported about graphic card tests with Quake 4 and now that we do it once again we do it for a special reason. As we’ve also reported ATi has released software optimizations for its X1000-series in OpenGL-based game engines. The one we hear most of is the Doom 3 engine which is also used by Quake 4. At The Firingsquad they’ve done a performance comparison with Quake 4 where it has tested not only ATi and nVidia’s flagships but also focused on what ATi’s new beta drivers with the rumoured OpenGL-fix will do for the performance in Quake 4.

ATi seems to have a real golden calf with the X1000-architecture’s new programmable memory controller because the performance differences are in some cases almost ridiculous considering it is “only” a driver update. For those who enjoy Doom3/Quake 4 and is thinking of getting a new graphic card this is some mighty interesting reading.
