Processor manuacturer Qualcomm has announced its next generation mobile circuits and we can expect major performance improvements with both CPU and GPU. With 28nm technology and dual CPU cores MSM8960 is expected to offer 5 times the performance of current Snapdragon models.

Qualcomm did not reveal the freqyencies or any other details of the CPU portion of the new SoC, but through dual cores and an out-of-order architecture the chipset will be capable of performance far superior of current models. Power consumption will be 75% lower too, which sounds almost like utopia to us.

It’s not just the processor portion that has been upgraded. Qualcomm claims that the Adreno 3xx architecture – the GPU found in MSM8960 – offers 4 times the performance of the current Adreno 2xx series. Qualcomm makes a more descriptive comparison with current video game systems, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. A milestone we would like to say. The graphics circuit support Open GL ES Halti and OpenCL 1.1, where the latter opens up for GPGPU applications.

Qualcomm MSM8960 will not only bring powerful execution units, the complete SoC acts as a 3G/4G modemand powers all other possible functionality of next generation smartphones. The first circuits are expected to roll out the factories by the end of next year, which indicate that the first MSM8960 mobile phones will arrive in 2012.
