We recently presented you with some exclusive information on AMD’s coming Radeon HD 5830 to fill the gap between the Radeon HD 5700 and HD 5800 series. Today, AMD has made a greater launch by announcing its fourth Evergreen GPU, dubbed Redwood. The graphics circuit has 400 stream processors, which brings the theoretic performance down to a quarter of the Cypress GPU, but 4000MHz GDDR5 memory shows there is still potential.
The reviews posted so far shows that AMD has succeeded in finding a good balance between performance and price where performance is a lot better than the precursor Radeon HD 4670 and have no problem competing with and often outperform competing cards in the sub-$100 price range.
Performance isn’t enough for a complete gaming experience at 1080p, but at 1680×1050 pixel resolution the card is capable of playing most games and with DirectX 11, Eyefinity and a very energy efficient 40nm architecture it’s a very exciting card.
The card seems like an interesting game/HTPC hybrid with its support for bitstreaming of HD audio via HDMI and now we just need to see the card in stock to make sure prices remain competitive.
