Even if NVIDIA’s Fermi architecture and the GF100 graphics card have appeared on pictures, AMD still has the world’s fastest GPU. If we look at cards with just one GPU it is Radeon HD 5870 that is King of the Hill thanks to AMD’s Cypress processor clocked at 850MHz. This poor 40 nanometer GPU have now been overclocked to nearly 1400MHz by overclocker Dean “Deanzo” Smith.

Using MSI Radeon HD 5870 and 150 liquid nitrogen Deanzo succeeded in overclocking the card to absolutely amazing 1380MHz GPU and 1350MHz memory (5400MHz), which is a LOT higher than the reference 850MHz/1200MHz.

This impressive overclocking led hem to victory in an internal overclocking competition at Kingpincooling.com, but also a world record in 3DMark Vantage Performance, even through the Core i7 processor could only do 4.75GHz.

The final score was 24486 points and he was close to completing a round of 3DMark with 1.4GHz GPU clock frequency but the load got to heavy and the card had a total meltdown after being fed 1.6V for some time.

This is just another proof of the clock frequencies capable thanks to the latest 40 nanometer technology and we look forward to seeing the first cards shipping with 1GHz clock frequency from factory.
