ATi just launched its new graphic card-family Radeon X1000 and these are the first cards by ATi that supports Shader Model 3.0, something ATi has really been sure to make clear with the slogan “Shader Model 3.0 done right”. Now it seems though that it hasn’t gotten everything right as not all functions specified for Shader Model 3 isn’t there and the slogan could be a bit misleading. We’re talking about a technology called vertex texture fetch which isn’t a part of the X1000-series Shader Model 3 support. The technology is used for effects such as displacement mapping and even if ATi claims you can work around this it might lead to performance hits.
