RAM drives for enthusiasts in Q1 2006?

Small preview imageSolid state hardrives relies on flash memory instead of mechanical components and it something most enthusiasts dream of. Superfast access and completely silent are two of the most interesting advantages with the technology. The problem though is the capacity and the price, which goes hand in hand. We have seen how motherboard manufacturer Gigabyte developed a solid state harddrive where they used regular DDR memory modules as storage and now it seems a similar model is on the way from another company. The unit will be called DDR Drive X1 and will use the PCI Express interface with a capacity up to 8GB.

“According to sources close to the firm, the drive will have a custom and upgradeable high performance DMA Engine, an external power jack with a switching AC adaptor, and will go into a 512 unit initial production run.”

Since there isn’t any official information about the unit you should perhaps consider it with a pinch of salt, but we are looking forward to seeing more DDR based harddrives on the market.
