Famous overclockers Sampsa and Stummerwinter have together with ASUS and Intel ventured for some serious overclocking during the weekend the results are in. Earlier today they managed to break the 3DMark Vantage Performance world record by hitting P44443 points. The perhaps most interesting about the world record is the hardware where ASUS’ new Rampage III Extreme was the very platform for the system.

We have reported on ASUS’ coming motherboard on several occasions and we now have the first signs of what the motherboard is capable of. An Intel Core i7 975 Extreme Edition processor overclocked to 5412MHz with some help from liquid nitrogen (-120 C) and 1.66V CPU voltage. While three Radeon HD 5870 graphics cards were overclocked to 1200/1300MHz by cooling them down to -35 degrees Celsius and 1.45V GPU voltage.

The new official world record was set using AMD’s Catalyst 9.10 drivers. The unofficial world record is P45441 points, but it was done with the not yet verified Catalyst 9.12 drivers. Sampsa and Stummerwinter believes they could score around P46000 points with the 9.12 drivers.

The motherboard is far from the only important component of the world record system, but we really look forward to the launch of Rampage III Extreme in March, not the least since Core i7 980X should arrive about the same time.
