Samsung is one of the biggest monitor manufacturers on the market and is, as most companies, working on new ways to expand its work. A vision it has is 3D monitors, which in a believable will be able to render a 3D image without any external help. Interestingly, it seems that it has actually already developed the first prototypes of a high-res 3D monitor, which also support a regular 2D mode. The monitor has been under development since 1999 and whereas other 3D displays has had some problems, Samsung’s latest prototype will not drop in resolution when it enters 3D mode. The model measures 17″, but Samsung is already planning a 19″ model for the retail market.

“The ministry said the new 3D display will hit the market in 2009 when new demand for a wide range of IT-related applications such as online games, e-shopping and 3D Web content will be ready.”

With a launch date set to 2009 we should be ale to expect high-res 3D displays in about two years and with over $23 million invested in this eight year project the chance of this going up in smoke is relatively small.
