Samsung is one of the really big memory manufacturers and we have at numerous occasions seen that it is focusing more and more on developing new and better flash memory. Now it has taken yet another step towards developing a MMCmicro flash card that house 2GB. Samsung’s new card use four 4Gbit NAND flash chips and will according to the company be the smallest, fastest flash card with the highest capacity. Despite being the size of a fingernail (12mmx14mmx1.1mm), the new MMCmicro will provide the highest transmission speed of any removable memory card, transmitting data 3.5 times faster than other cards. The card can store 12 hours of mobile video and is fast enough to download three hours of it in under two minutes. An adapter allows the card to be plugged into any multimedia card slot. MMCmicro is also a format used by mobile phones, just as MicroSD/Transflash, which we recently reported about, but despite the small measurement differences between MMCmicro and MicroSD they are not compatible. Most new mobile phones are made for MicroSD/Transflash cards, but if we are to believe Samsung’s information there is both performance capacity to gain from the MMCmicro format. MMCmicro and MicroSD both have a read speed at about 7MB/s, but while MicroSD has a write speed at only ~2MB/s MMCmicro can proudly boost a +7MB/s write speed. There is no information available when we will see the 2GB card, but the 1GB model will appear sometime in 2006. Source: Samsung
