Samsung will soon catch up to competitors Seagate and Western Digital by announcing a new top model among its energy efficient and spacious harddrives. Seagate already has a 1.5TB models in its Barracuda 7200.11 series and Western Digital recently raised the bar with a massive 2TB model in the Caviar Green series with tons of storage in a low power package. The EcoGreen series is Samsung’s answer and it is about to announce a new 1.5TB model to complete the current flagship at 1TB.
Unlike Western Digital, Samsung mentions the specified rotational speed for its EcoGreen series and to save power it uses a 5400 RPM motor which should be sufficient for the intended systems, while keeping the noise at a minimum.
The power consumption will be at most 6.3W, which is a bit lower than the 7W consumed by WD’s 2TB Caviar Green model. The performance seems to be fairly equal and with quite similar specifications it hardly comes as any kind of surprise.
The first benchmarks with Samsung EcoGreen 1.5TB can be found over at Akiba that confirms the numbers given by the manufacturer. All we need now is a launch date and some prices to see if the drive is worth the expense.
