Samsung is a giant among semiconductors and one of few companies that makes all components necessary to build a memory module. The company has presented what is claimed to be the first DDR4 memory module. The module comes with 30nm grade memory chips and operate at 2133 MHz with only 1.2V.

Beside a low operating voltage Samsung has used energy saving technology called Pseudo Open Drain (POD) that is used by e.g. graphics memory. The POD technology makes DDR4 module so efficient it only consumes half of the power the equivalent DDR3 module uses during write and read.

Samsung’s first DDR4 module is still far from its full potential. According to the memory maker the new circuit architecture will be capable of reaching speeds between 1.6 GHz and 3.2 GHz, which is big step up from current DDR3 technology.

“The new DDR4 DRAM will build even greater confidence in our cutting-edgegreenmemory, particularly when we introduce four-gigabit (Gb) DDR4-based products using next generation process technology for mainstream application.” berättade Dong Soo Jun, president på minnesavdelningen, Samsung Electronics

When the DDR4 technology is embraced by processor makers isn’t entirely certain. Earlier stories have spoken of an introduction in 2013, but the technology will not get any wide spread until 1-2 years later. Then the technology will be capable of speeds up to 4000 MHz.
