Samsung has during the 2007 Samsung Mobile Solution Forum presented a fusion technology that makes it possible to use both types of NAND flash – SLC (single level cell) and MLC (Multi-level cell) – in the same circuit. This way it hopes to be able to offer the advantages of both technologies; the speed of SLC and the cheaper storage capacity of MLC. It is currently working on a commercial solution at 4Gb (512MB) that it will start shipping next month. During the event Samsung also presented a 1.8″ Solid State Drive prototype built with 8Gb (1GB) SLC chips, but this one has no release date. The company has taken its two previous SSDs and we can imagine that we will see this one in some of Samsung’s portable devices not too far from now.
