Samsung R55 has been announced at Samsung’s Korean portal and this is the first laptop on the market that is using a hybrid harddrive. HHD is a mix of a conventional mechanical harddrive and flash memory, which is used by SSD devices. In short you could say that Samsung has expanded the functions of the memory buffer of harddrive. Hybrid harddrives use a flash memory buffer at several hundred megabytes and the 80GB harddrive Samsung has equipped R55 with has 256MB integrated flash memory. It is also Samsung that is making the HHD (Samsung MH80) and the only thing missing is the price. We should be able to expect a price somewhere in between the HDD and SSD market price, hopefully closer to the first.
According to Samsung its hybrid harddrive will offer up to 26% faster read rates, up to 71% faster write speed and 32% lower power consumption compared to a regular harddrive.
