Samsung MoviNAND is a kind of integrated flash solution which doesn’t just contain the storage chip itself but also a multimedia card controller (MMC) and a firmware. By fitting this into a single package Samsung has created an effective and small solution making it possible to fit a lot of storage inside mobile units. Samsung has started to ship test MovieNAND chip samples at 1GB and 2GB which through its MMC interface will be able to reach transfer speeds at up to 52MB/s. The massproduction of 1GB and 2GB models will start in September while 512MB and 4GB models are expected to appear at the end of the year.
“As an embedded memory card, Samsung’s moviNAND makes it unnecessary to have an external memory card slot in mobile devices. Another option is to use the embedded flash with a removable MMC card to enable a virtually unlimited amount of higher storage capacity.”
That it will be easier for manufacturers to fit more storage space into mobile phones and other mobile units is truly positive news to all of us.
