Small preview imageSamsung has developed a series of harddrives without any moveable components for small mobile units such as small laptops, Palms etc. The harddrive are SSDs, Solid State Disks, which means no moveable parts are involved. Just as the “superdisk” M-Systems launched last week its all about flash memory or even more precise NAND Flash memory. The big difference is that Samsung has gone easy with the size of its harddrives and the top model will be able to store up to 16GB of data.

Without moveable components the new harddrives will be totally quiet, require 5% of the power of a regular HDD and according to Samsung also have better transfer speeds.

“To ensure compatibility, SSDs have been designed to look like HDDs from the outside. Samsung has developed a full line up of SSDs: 2.5-inch type SSDs that carry 16 NAND Flash devices of 4Gbit or 8Gbit density for 8GBytes and16GByte of storage respectively. 1.8-inch type SSDs will also offer 4GBytes or 8GBytes of density. SSDs will open new demands in the conventional storage industry especially for low density mobile appliances.”

The 1.8″ model of Samsung’s SSD will be available in August 2005 but at what price is uncertain. Any case this is quite good news as harddrives without moveable components is starting to get more and more room on the market. Hopefully we can look forward to something similar in your very own home-PC very soon.
