Samsung is one of the leading actors on the memory market and during the development of the new graphics memory standard GDDR4 Samsung has made the biggest impresssions. Now it is time again for Samsung as it has announced that it has started to ship GDDR4 memory. The chips now leaving Samsung’s plants are made with 80nm technology and are clocked at 2.4GHz which results in a bandwidth at 9.6Gbps per chip, you can compare this to today’s GDDR3 chips which can go up to 1.7GHz at best. Not as impressive as the speeds Samsung has displayed earlier, 3.2GHz with 12.8Gbps bandwidth, but still a big step from the graphics memory of today. Samsung’s GDDR4 chip will most likely make its debute with ATI’s R580+ circuit that is expected to be launched during September, but more about this later.
