Samsung isn’t just a respected maker of smartphones and tablets, but also makes most of its ocmponents where it has now developed a new memory technology for mobile products. Samsung’s new 1Gb mobile DRAM module will offer 4 times as high performance as LPDDR2 memory used in current smartphones and tablets.

Samsung has chosen to equip the new DRAM module with an extra wide I/O interface to send and receive data as fast as possible. With a data path with 512 pins the DRAM module can reach speeds up to 12.8 GB/s, which is far more than the 3.2 GB/s that current mobile LPDDR2 DRAM can do over a 32 pins interface. Samsung’s wide I/O DRAM also has 87% lower power consumption and will improve battery times.

“We will continue to aggressively expand our high-performance mobile memory product line to further propel the growth of the mobile industry.” kommenterade Byungse So, vice VD vid minnesproduktplanering och applikationsutveckling på Samsung Electronics.

Samsung makes the new mobile 1Gb DRAM modules with 50nm technology and aims to use the circuits in mobile units, like smartphones and tablets.

In 2013 Samsung is planning to launch 4Gb mobile DRAM circuits made with more efficient 20nm grade technology.
