SanDisk recently acquired Israeli company M-System for $1.35 billion. M-System has for several years been working on Solid State Drive solutions for, among others, the military sector. HWzone has now come across some interesting information that says that SanDisk has intentions of using M-System’s technology for the retail market and that it is already working on a SSD unit for PCs.
“The new drives are supposed to be marketed as part of a few manufactures’ laptop computers, and rumors refer to Dell as being the first to integrate these drives into its Core 2 Duo line of laptops in a number of months.”
The first tests that have appeared seems to display a good read speed but considerably worse write speed for M-System’s SSD unit. We should point out that the first models are still under development and that they are intended for the mobile market first of all. We’re looking forward to seeing more of SanDisk and M-System as we now seem to have a real competitor to Samsung which is also working hard on the SSD technology.
