SCPC 2005: Price/performance ends with Stinger coming out on top

We have finally reached the end of our last category in our Swedish Computer Performance Championship: Price/Performance. As expected the interest wasn’t as high as it was with the other two main categories as it is a completely new category still being evaluated until next year. Also in this category we got a favorite winner where two time champion Jimmie “Stinger” Knutas managed to bring home the cup with a pretty safe distance. Stinger managed to come out on top in two of the three subcategories, 3Dmark05 and SuperPi thanks to a very well composed system based on an Intel Pentium M 730 (Dothan) processor and a GeForce 7800GT which fit right under 7000SEK.

Jimmie showed that he without a doubt is still a man to count on when it comes to overclocking and by focusing completely on the new category Price/Performance he managed to go all the way. That a computer withouth any physical modifications costing less than 7000 SEK would get close to the 10 000 mark with 3Dmark 05 and almost go below 25 sekunder in SuperPi is not something many would expect but it really shows what you can achieve by overclocking even with relatively small means.

We shouldn’t forget about the rest though, up until the last minutes it seemed like two other champions would be battling for the second place. But Jon “Elmor” Sandström had other plans and despite some problems with the uploading of the result, which resulted in him sending it directly to the jury instead, his result was fianlly posted and with a system similar to Stinger’s Elmor managed to steal the second place of the Price/Performance category.

Before Elmor posted his score it looked like former champions Marcus “Kinc” Hultin and Peter “Incido” Nilsson would end up at the same score, but with Elmor’s score received Kinc got a two point advantage and managed to take home the third place in the SPC2005 with a the least to say surprising processor, Intel Celeron D 310. Together with a really powerful graphic card, X1800 XL, Kinc managed to collect 44 pionts, while Incido went for processign power in the form of an AMD Opteron 146 and had to settle with 42 pionts and an honorable fourth place.

More information about the competition and the winners will be posted soon!

We would like to congratulate the winners and at the same time say we had hoped for more participants in this category, but we know that some have been struggling to get their systems to fit the rules, but had to give up for various reasons. We didn’t expect the same crowd as the two main categories though, but we will keep discussing whether we should have a third category in future championships and if we should change anything. Time will tell.
