Seagate is the leading harddrive manufacturer but as the world’s biggest harddrive maker it is taking things surprisingly slow when it comes to Solid State Drives. Even if the SSD market is still maturing, Seagate has chosen to remain a bystander and has now announced that its first SSDs will not arrive until 2009. At the same time it openly admits that the SSD technology may replace the mechanical drives in the future. Even if the SSD technology still has some teething problems and drawbacks, Seagate is interested in the performance.
Seagate has been on the hunt for a NAND manufacturer to optimize the availability and prices of the highly essential memory circuits, but so far the hunt seems to have been fruitless and is openly admitting that it is negotiating with the major NAND flash manufacturers to reach an agreement.
