When we report about new storage drives it’s usually new Solid State Drives and such, but even if there are many of us who would like to see the end of the mechanical harddrives, the reality is rather different. The mechanical harddrives will be around for quite some time and is under constant development. There are number of tricks to improve the performance of a mechanical drive and of them is to increase the rotational speed of the platters. To regular consumers, Western Digital’s Raptor series is the market leader with its 10,000 RPM engine, while other high-performance drives work at 7,2000 RPM. It seems though as Raptor will get a new competitor as Seagate is planning a 10,000 RPM drive.
This information comes from ChileHardware, which in turn have talked to a Seagate engineer.
“Seagate is readying a 10.000rpm hard drive to compete directly with Western Digital Raptor hard drives, they feel that the demand for this disks for the desktop market is big enough and that also the cost of producing such a hard drive is low enough.”
