Seagate unveiled the world’s first 3TB harddrive this Summer with the external FreeAgent GoFlex Desk. We are eagerly awaiting the the discrete version to fit inside our cases, but it will take months before it will be available for purchase.

Seagate boasted that external FreeAgent GoFlex used a single 3TB harddrive. The problem with this solution is that the drive requires five platters to reach this capacity. A solution that is both costly and could cause problems with the formfactor, even if it has been done before.

While users are screaming for the equivalent 3TB 3.5″ harddrive, retailers have started listing the delivery date for Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk 3TB; December 6th 2010. The external drive has according to our sources not even been seen by media in Europe and very little, if any, information on the harddrive inside of FreeAgent GoFlex has been released.

It is at least clear that 3TB harddrives are still far from reaching our desks, or even computers. If other manufacturers are holding off until they can reach 3TB capacity with only 4 platters or use Seagate’s 5-platter design is also something we would like to know.
