RV770 is the chips that will replace the RV670 as the next high-end chip from AMD/ATI. Specification rumors are floating around (much thanks to us…), even the name Radeon HD 4000 has been suggested, which is not final though. Some more information on the upcoming high-end core has been posted over at Chiphell, saying that the previously posted information may not have been entirely on the mark.

According to this information, the specifications may actually be better than that. Especially as they claim that the number TMUs may have more than doubled. Previous rumors have said that the number of TMUs would “only” double. No exact figure is given.

They also say that the core is as small as 250mm². For comparison; G92 is 330mm² and RV670 is 192mm². This is of course much thanks to the 55nm process. They also say that the core is ready to be mass produced, reached revision A11, and with a yield of 71%, price are most likely going to be quite low.

Overall, RV770 builds on the RV670, which in turn builds on the R600, and it’s not expected to revolutionize things. But then again, it already has DirectX 10.1 and being faster is usually enough. Tie that to the scaling of CrossFireX and you’re in for a ride (hopefully).
