Sony BWU-100A was recently announced as Sony’s first Blu-ray burner for the computer market and just as earlier launches by LG and BenQ this is a unit capable of handling all three optical formats; CD, DVD and Blu-ray. HD DVD is not available with BWU-100A, as one might’ve guessed. The specifications for the burner reveals that BD-R/RE media can be written at up to 2x speed, just as the previous burners of the first generation. The unit supports both single-layer discs at 25GB and dual-ayer with 50GB capacity. Sony has chosen to use the older, but acknowledged PATA interface and by the looks of it no SATA model seems to be coming.

“Now consumers, professional videographers and filmmakers can store, record and experience the highest capacity of high-definition video available – from capture to playback,”

What’s also interesting with Sony’s burner is that the price is set to 750 USD, which on paper is considerably lower than that of previous Blu-ray burners we’ve seen. Exactly what price differences there will be in August when BWU-100A arrives remains to be seen.
