Sony has one of the most popular mobile video game consoles on the markets in its PlayStation Portable, PSP. As handheld industry is evolving constantly and one of the biggest forerunners lately is the Apple iPhone. Apple’s advanced mobile phone was recently upgraded with a much more powerful graphics chip, which has lured game developers to the platform, and the App Store is filling up with new and exciting games.
Apple has sold over 40 million iPhones in 2 years while Sony has sold over 50 million PSP consoles in four years. Apple has a considerably more expensive product but its broad functionality lures consumers from all around and many are starting to question carrying around an extra device for games, when mobile phones are close to offering the same experience.

Sony is starting to see reality for what it is and it has been said to consider developing a video game – mobile phone hybrid to fight iPod and iPhone.
One component is Sony Ericsson’s mobile phone that together with PSP is expected to be the main ingredients of Sony’s recipe. It started planning the new device back in July of last year, according to other sources.
To be completely frank this feels both expected and surprising, expected to happen sooner or later, surprising that Sony is doing it, since chips are powerful enough and don’t need to be niched while Sony is usually highly conservative with its gaming consoles.
