Home electronics giant Sony was perhaps the leader among portable music players in the eighties and nineties with its Walkman series. Now, 20 years later, Sony has become one of the crowd and instead Apple has moved up to become the most recognized brand with its family of iPods. Sony has launched many Walkman media players over he last couple of years, but none of them have been able to restore the former glory. The next attempt is around the corner and Sony is betting on the relatively new OLED technology in an attempt to climb back on top.

Sony’s new NW-X1000 series of portable media players comes with a 3″ OLED display sporting 432×240 pixels resolution, with touch navigation. The media player comes with 16GB or 32GB storage and supports WiFi, with a YouTube-like interface.

The players are slightly smaller than Apple’s iPod Touch and measures only 52×96.5×9.8 mm (W x L x D). Alas, they are so far only said to appear in Japan, when and if they appear in Europe is uncertain.
